Jan Hystek our own ‘biker’ star of ABC radio and web pages now writes just for us.
As instructed here is a first instalment of my trip around the top of Australia beginning with the lead up to the idea to take on such an extended ride.
It must have been about the beginning of 2010 that the members of the Ulysses club started to make preliminary preparations and time tables for the long ride to Albany in West Ausy. I liked the idea and had a look around for someone to look after the farm for about 8 weeks from the 3.3.2010 till the end of April. I did not have to look far because my very dear friends Kevin and Rachel were only too happy to look after the place and our two lovely dogs, so that started the bike rolling. However there was another problem had to consider, which was my wife. Heather is in Bupa nursing home in Tamworth and is used to seeing me every other day but that was taken care of by her lovely daughter and the very kind staff of the nursing home.
Now all that was in place it became a question of cost and can I feel comfortable to take a trip of some 14,000 km which will cost, I calculated, about $800 a week which would include some sight-seeing cost so it still comes to a fair amount. Anyway at my age one has to take every opportunity that one gets to see more of this great country, and looking back now it was all worth it.
